The Jakarta Teachers’ Forum presented a proposal to make SMAN 6 a girls-only school and SMAN 70 a boys-only facility to Jakarta Deputy Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama on Monday. Basuki approved the proposal, adding that it should be implemented as soon as possible. “The deputy governor was interested in the idea to accept female or male students only,” Retno Listriyarti, head of the teachers’ organization, told Detik. com. “He wants it be implemented next year, as soon as possible.” The two schools have a history of participating in large street fights at the start of the new school year. This year’s violence claimed the life of one SMAN 6 student and resulted in numerous injuries. Retno said the move could prevent further violence between students of the two schools. “Hopefully they will be dating instead,” she said. The Education Minister had previously said the ministry was unable to come up with a solution. Students from the two schools agreed to a peace treaty after this year's violence, but concerned parties worried that next year’s students would only reignite tensions.
