National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesperson Sutopo Purwo Nugroho warned on Thursday that with such conditions, flooding might get worse and would likely spread to other areas. Agency head Syamsul Maarif has reported updates to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, warning that the Presidential Palace in Central Jakarta would likely be inundated should the West Flood Canal be unable to cope with the increasing volume of water. “It is not a problem [that the palace be flooded]. The residents should be our priority. Just do anything it takes to alleviate the flooding and keep assisting the Jakarta administration,” Yudhoyono said as quoted by Sutopo. The agency head met with Jakarta Governor Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and Coordinating People’s Welfare Minister Agung Laksono at City Hall on Thursday morning to discuss efforts to alleviate the flooding.
