Jakarta. Presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto said during the fifth
presidential debate on Saturday evening that overpopulation posed a threat to
the environment, and that education was the solution.

“The problem of environmental destruction is due to the fact that the capacity
of the Earth, the capacity of our territory, has been heavily burdened in
dealing with the population boom,” he said. “As such, in Indonesia, our beloved
nation, each year we have an increase of 5 million new citizens. This means
five million new mouths, for which we need to prepare food, we need to prepare
all the facilities a new citizen needs. Five million each year. This is what is
speeding up the process of environmental destruction. Also, with the lack of
regulation or monitoring, this only speeds up environmental destruction.

“Our dilemma is how, if we do not increase growth — how do we create new jobs?
So this is the dilemma. Growth must continue, but we need to handle
environmental destruction.”

Prabowo introduced a plan he called a “Strategy of Many Ways.”

“Among other ways, through education, we can increase understanding about the
relationship between environmental growth and the need to care for our
environment. … We need to chase after economic growth. But education is
something we need to push and something we need to develop.”

Indonesians go to the polls on Wednesday to vote for a successor to President
Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, whose second five-year term ends in October.
