I normally use 2-cell LiPo batteries (HobbyKing is my favorite supplier for
their large selection and low prices). They come in different capacities,
current ratings and sizes. You're going to need a LiPo charger if you go
down that route, which is a few extra $10's.
As far as connectors go, what I normally do is build my own adapter cable.
SparkFun and others sell JST connectors that come with just two exposed
wires ("pigtail") on the other end, to which you can solder or crimp
whatever connector mating to what your battery has.
I also believe that SparkFun and others may have some LiPos that already
come with this very JST connector, so you don't need an adapater. Make sure
to get a 2S or 3S (2-cell / 3-cell) LiPo for the correct voltage range.
Alternately, you can avoid the JST stuff and solder two wires directly to
the Vin/GND pins, but this option is not recommended for soldering
beginners (as you might cause shorts / cold solder joints).
