I wanted to build an interesting first project with the IOIO and I decided
to try a 'rover' vehicle that might be a good platform for further
experimentation. I'm a professional programmer (and know Java but only
rudimentary Android) but I had no previous robotics experience so I did a
lot of searching on the internet. I decided to try working with the Maisto
Rock Crawler

(which I had seen several examples of online) because its cheap and very
mobile indoors and out. I realized that I would need to get a motor
controller board for this, and came across a posting where someone had
successfully used a Rover 5 controller

with an Arduino board. So I have worked this up over the past few weeks and
after a fair amount of labor in my limited spare time I have a working
prototype, though it is a bit of a wiring nightmare. Fortunately I labeled
everything. :)

First project, so it leaves a lot to be desired but I learned a lot. I'm
seeing that the motor controller board is a really critical component that
dictates everything else, particularly in terms of project wiring
complexity and software. And there are brushed motors and brushless which
require different controllers. I'm still not clear on what my options are
moving forward to other platforms. What controllers have other people used
successfully for the two motor types?
