Gnome programs hate everything that's not sanctified by the allmighty
Gnome of Absolute Unusabilty, and especially everything that doesn't use
fugly freetype fonts.

Seriously, this is a known issue, and it seems to either be intentional or
an X bug, or both, and only affects localised font support code in Xlib.
Running 'xset -fp rehash' seems to remedy the situation. The problem might
already have been fixed since it didn't happen on my system when I thought
of reporting it through Debian's bug tracking system a month or so ago.
Therefore I wasn't appropriate to report it through that system, and since
the X and Gnome crowd seem to require registration to a bugzilla system to
report bugs directly to them, they apparently don't even want know how buggy
shit their code is.
