In the time since trying to get this to work, I discovered that my computer (still) had major hardware problems and have been forced to use a laptop. I don't use ion3 on the laptop because the screen is too small for the model to work for me.
So, uh, thanks a lot for trying, but I cannot test (use) your workaround at this time. :/ I was actually hoping to get more information on what's wrong so I could file a bug on the gnome bugzilla (which I didn't think required registration), but that will have to wait until the computer where I use ion is working again.. I have a feeling if I say anything more, I'm in danger of getting into the sort of flame war where both sides end up hating me.
