OK, I've changed the USE flag to a local one:
iontruetype: Enable *unsupported* and *experimental* TrueType support
You can either add this to the USE flags is your make.conf or, better, put
this line in your /etc/portage/package.use:
x11-wm/ion3 iontruetype
