cut and paste

Hello.  I recently bought an old laptop.  I plan to set it up 
exclusively with ion3.  I'm worried about cutting/copying and pasting 
between programs, though.  Currently, with gnome in the background, I'm 
able to do this when running ion3.  Will this ability be lost when I set 
my recently acquired old laptop up without gnome?
