Sure, it's impossible to foretell anything about AppleWM 1.2.0 and OrangeWM 0.0.5 solely on the basis of their respective version numbers, but the goal here is to compare two releases of the same Ion. And, if you keep some major/minor/patch versioning scheme and put up a rationale on how they are increased into the FAQ, then users would presumably have easier time to decide whether to upgrade from 0.1.12 to 0.1.16 without having to adjust their configurations, when compared to upgrading from ion-20010101 to ion-20010601. The YYYYMMDD scheme looks kinda too CVS-snapshotish all the time. (Not that this should matter too much, of course, as there are already well separated stable/development downloads, and ChangeLog and Release Notes...)
