It is automatic. There's a tab-sized tooltip displaying 'act: WScratchpad' (where WScratchpad is the name of the scratchpad) on the top left corner of the screen. The snapshot release only displays this notification for the scratchpad, but in SVN it has been moved to screen code to display it whenever something is mapped on a hidden workspace as well.
Can it be turned off? either altogether or for certain workspaces?
