Well, I'm currently using enlightenment, but I do use workspaces as you 
describe. There is no hunting for windows, and in fact I have some 
scripts that launch everything as I intend upon start up.

I did try ion, but at a time when I did have time to configure it, so it 
did not work well. I'll probably try it again some time, but in the mean 
time I'm just lurking here ;-)
