A friend of mine will be buying his first Apple product and it will be an iPad 3rd gen. He's a professor here in the states but does a fair amount of teaching in Italy (sometimes 3-4 months out of the year).
Is he better off getting the Verizon version given the better LTE coverage here in the US and the option to make a Verizon iPad a hotspot? What about setting up some temporary cellular coverage while in Italy - can the Verizon iPad use the GSM radio or is it locked for CDMA only? If CDMA-only, would this preclude him from being able to use it over cellular while in Italy?
