We use all Dell hardware and the only thing we set is the Address type
(static or dhcp), for static we also set the IP address, network mask
and gateway address that is it.  

Now on Dell hardware I can tell you that the BMC rides on the same
physical NIC connection as the first eth connection on the box.  Because
of that you can NOT create a LAN based connection to the BMC IP from the
box that you are on as it would need to go out and back in on the same
interface and that's not possible unless you install a loopback cable
into the NIC, which then defeats the network connection to anything
else.  So if that is how you are checking it, that could be why it is
failing.  For checking the local box use "ipmitool -I open ..."

The lan access still does not work but this is another story. It may be
a newtork problem. Is the MAC address for default GW mandatory?
