I have tested the fix and I did not see any problems with the operations
I was doing at the time (reads and writes of various lengths to various
devices.)  I believe the symptom I was seeing was that it would send a
an extra garbage byte, which triggered a write operation to an I2C
EEPROM that I was attempting to read.  Fortunately for me the EEPROM was
blank, but I can see how someone with a production system might not like
this behavior...
