[ I don't want to start an OS flamewar here (or anywhere else), but I
think this has to be clarified as it is important in your argumentation. ]
I'm sorry, but the above for servers seems to be explainable onlyby
assuming some interesting definition for "market leader". Does it have to
be sold for an expensive price to qualify?
I don't have the detailed numbers handy, but a google search pointed to,
for example:
http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1003-200-4979275.html?tag=prntfr
(IDC Server OS market share in 2000)
Windows: 41%
Linux: 27%
Netware: 17%
Unix: 14%
Other: 2%
For example, Linux is about twice as popular as Solaris, HP-UX, Aix,
Tru64, etc. *combined*.
Granted these are for all kinds of servers, but give some figure for
popularity.
For small to medium-sized IP servers, I couldn't find any statistics but
I'd estimate:
40% BSD + Linux
25% Solaris
20% Windows
15% Rest
(personally I've a feeling that BSD+Linux should have a lot higher
percentage, but I tried to be unbiased)
Large IP servers (GB's of memory, etc.) are a small minority of all IP
server and should not spell out the way we're heading.
Lies, damned lies, statistics etc. aside, I think you can _at least_
safely assume that free operating systems are a major, if not dominant,
player in IP server markets.
Please open the windows of your office and look outside :-)
