mumble.  frankly I've always thought this was broken.  a host's DNS default 
search path has nothing inherently to do with the points to which it attaches
to the network. we need to make a clear distinction between attributes which
are specific to a particular network attachment point, and attributes which
are related to a host's name or the services it performs.
