Barry and Ross,

Having personally experienced absolutely crazy DX on the SRF-59, I
would certainly be inclined to believe Rob Ross.

One such crazy contact I had was the reception of HLCA-972, a bizarre
propagation meltdown that I still have trouble believing (even with a minidisk
recording of the incredible fade-in, on my ICF-2010 spotting receiver).
Somehow, during the Asian sunset around 0130 local time, the HLCA signal came
up
from the noise and reached a booming level, sounding almost like a local on
the MD recording. While the MD was recording the ICF-2010's signal from the
QL 2.0+, I was grabbing the SRF-59 like a maniac, and spinning the analog
thumb wheel furiously, settling down just to right of KJR-950, where there was
a
monstrous heterodyne.

Panicked by visions of wicked propagation fades, I almost maxed out the
SRF-59's volume control (friends, the SRF-59 has OVERWHELMING audio power,
so don't try this, except in cases of emergency like this) and heard a
glorious trace of Korean on the SRF-59, right before the signal took a dive
way
down in the noise. I did it! I logged Korea on the SRF-59! How did it
happen? Who knows, but miracles happen in DX, and I have the MD recording of
the
booming HLCA signal on the 2010, to remind me of mine own little miracle
(which, incidentally, set an SRF-59 distance record that even Rob Ross hasn't
been
able to beat :>)

So Barry and others, crazy things do happen in DX, and the more time
you spend at the dials, the more crazy chances you seem to get (like Rob).

              73, Gary
