This bit from today's "Inside Radio" -=-=-=-=- Localism proceeding could impact operations. The biggest proposed change is to the "remote station operation" rule that would require licensees "maintain a physical presence" 24 hours a day. The FCC says that "can only increase the ability of a station to provide information - particularly in the event of severe weather or a local emergency." -=-=-=-=-
So, they are thinking about requiring stations to be run by a person when on the air. My guess is that if this is required, it will simply cause stations to sign off during less-profitable times. This, of course, will provide absolutely no information in case of an emergency. An automated reply is better than none at all. From a DXers perspective, sign-offs are a good thing. It's interesting to see radio destroying itself from so many directions. Ridiculous FCC requirements, cookie-cutter programming aimed at everyone and really pleasing very few, intentional interference from IBOC and squeezing in every last possible signal. No wonder internet streaming listenership has increased so much in the past year. Sign 'em off. My radio is waiting...
