While I have shipped insured items I packed via FedEx and UPS, the better practice is to let them do the packing, (Kinkos, UPS Stores) Why? If you do the packing and there is damage due to rough handling, unless the package shows serious exterior damage, both companies will fight you tooth and nail over the claim. If they do the packing and shipping, they can hardly blame damage on improper packing. FedEx does not offer insurance per se, but agrees to reimburse you for loss or damage for the stated value PROVIDED you can prove the value. Google UPS horror stories or FedEx horror stories. (United Package Smashers, etc.) USPS is worse. A buddy shipped a shotgun in a hard gun case inside a box. The gun was wrapped in bubble wrap. The recipient received the gun and the stock was broken off and the through bolt assembly which holds the stock to the receiver was bent. This indicated heavy pressure was placed on the receiver during shipment. USPS denied the insurance claim citing improper packing. He eventually got a regional supervisor on the telephone who agreed the damage was obviously caused by improper handling and okayed the claim. He received his check 9 months after making his initial claim.
