University clubs cannot afford to buy complete sets of gear for all their fencers as it is far too expensive. I can only speak for UCD but a large amount of our grant every year is spent on replacing broken gear and old gear. Things like breeches are considered to be luxuries that we can't afford. I think Nuala's suggestion that 800 N gear should be compulsory was a bit over the top and am glad that Paul talked her out of it. There is not much point insisting that all fencers wear all the proper gear at competitions cause it won't be enforceable.
