Mark, This is a complete re-architecture for Internet Scanner. Many of us have wanted the ability to have a SQL backend to Scanner for a ton of reasons. As for the Access backend, it was limited, true you didn't need Access installed to have an MDB file, but the potential data storage was limited and MSDE/SQL 2000 provides for many new possibilities. But to most directly answer your question, MSDE/SQL Server 2000 is required because the MDF files utilized by SQL are not stand-alone files that can simply be manipulated by an ODBC driver, it requires the SQL engine. As for the scanning laptops, we have them also and the Beta runs great on them, especially on XP.
