Mark,
Thank you for the comments - sorry I haven't been able to respond sooner. Regarding
your questions about MSDE and running IS on laptops:
* Enterprise and laptop-based users have been requesting MSDE support for Internet
Scanner for some time, largely due to scalability, maintenance, and reporting needs.
While there are probably some users who requested MSDE support without fully realizing
how this would affect the overall security of their scanning platform, the majority of
users with whom I've discussed this feature actually see it as an opportunity to
ensure that the database used to store their vulnerability information is secured
according to the guidelines of their overall database security policy.
* Although no end-of-life has been announced for Access, it appears likely that over
time the old Access Jet engine will be supplanted by the newer, SQL Server-like MSDE
as the database engine for Microsoft's enterprise desktop platforms, such as Windows
XP Pro. As we planned the architectural changes at the heart of Internet Scanner 7.0
we decided that an application designed to run on corporate desktops (such as Windows
2000 Profession or XP Professional) -- or perhaps even a Windows server platform --
would be best served by an MSDE database backend. The fact that Windows XP has the
ability to run many other services traditionally considered server services further
blurs the line between the two and makes it important for vendors to develop
applications that have the flexibility to operate on either - something MSDE offers
that Access does not. In this regard, I think Internet Scanner is indeed ahead of the
other vendors.
Please feel free to give me a call if you'd like to discuss this further - I'd be
happy to hear any additional comments or suggestions you have in this regard.
Thanks
Patrick

Subject: RE: [ISSForum] Why is MSDE needed for Beta7
Thanks for the input. I can see the need for backending SQL, but I can't see
a valid requirement to put a db server on all my scanning machines. It is
simply opening up too many possibilities. I think alot of the user community
may take this as a lead to look at other products that don't require
database engines. I haven't found another that does.

Mark,
This is a complete re-architecture for Internet Scanner. Many of us have
wanted the ability to have a SQL backend to Scanner for a ton of reasons.
As for the Access backend, it was limited, true you didn't need Access
installed to have an MDB file, but the potential data storage was limited
and MSDE/SQL 2000 provides for many new possibilities. But to most directly
answer your question, MSDE/SQL Server 2000 is required because the MDF files
utilized by SQL are not stand-alone files that can simply be manipulated by
an ODBC driver, it requires the SQL engine. As for the scanning laptops, we
have them also and the Beta runs great on them, especially on XP.
Cheers,

Subject: [ISSForum] Why is MSDE needed for Beta7
Does anyone know why MSDE is required for the application to run? I keep
getting the error "MSDE/SQL 8 or greater required for Internet Scanner
installation." I think I know what MSDE is, but why is it needed to run the
scanner? Access was not needed to run the scanner, only to edit the tables.
I can't imagine putting MSDE or SQL on all my scanner laptops (we do
traveling audits) with the myrid vulnerabilities associated with them. A
patch nightmare will ensue because ALL SQL patches are needed for MSDE.
