I agree that pushing the backend scanning to an sql server is a big improvement, but one suggestion that I have sent to [EMAIL PROTECTED], is that they should support many odbc drivers instead of just MSSQL. MSSQL is riddled with holes, and we run our databases on linux/unix machines. We have an odbc driver for mysql, and it would be really nice if we were able to connect iss strait to a mysql or sybase database. I am no expert on ODBC, but from what I understand, if they are using it for mssql, it should not be hard to take any ODBC data source. I have attempted to use another ODBC data source without any luck. If anyone would like to use a different ODBC driver it might be worth mentioning here or [EMAIL PROTECTED]

For those keeping track, I was able to get ISS working. One of our keys was up on maintenance, and the report said they were both fine. But it works now. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the input. I can see the need for backending SQL, but I can't see
a valid requirement to put a db server on all my scanning machines. It is
simply opening up too many possibilities. I think alot of the user community
may take this as a lead to look at other products that don't require
database engines. I haven't found another that does.

Mark,

This is a complete re-architecture for Internet Scanner. Many of us have
wanted the ability to have a SQL backend to Scanner for a ton of reasons.
As for the Access backend, it was limited, true you didn't need Access
installed to have an MDB file, but the potential data storage was limited
and MSDE/SQL 2000 provides for many new possibilities. But to most directly
answer your question, MSDE/SQL Server 2000 is required because the MDF files
utilized by SQL are not stand-alone files that can simply be manipulated by
an ODBC driver, it requires the SQL engine. As for the scanning laptops, we
have them also and the Beta runs great on them, especially on XP.

Cheers,

Does anyone know why MSDE is required for the application to run? I keep getting the error "MSDE/SQL 8 or greater required for Internet Scanner installation." I think I know what MSDE is, but why is it needed to run the scanner? Access was not needed to run the scanner, only to edit the tables. I can't imagine putting MSDE or SQL on all my scanner laptops (we do traveling audits) with the myrid vulnerabilities associated with them. A patch nightmare will ensue because ALL SQL patches are needed for MSDE. _______________________________________________ ISSForum mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED]
