ISS already have IPS with the Guard gateway device which is proven around the World, (there is a free upgrade from Network Sensor to Guard!), and with the VCIS implementation planned ISS have will have an IPS far in advance of anything else out there.
I am an old man! I have spent my life seeing "wonder boxes" that will do it all, they have never worked! Recently i looked at a "box" that would do IDS, Content Filtering, SPAm blocking, firewall and web cacheing ---- and guess what? It did'nt work of course! What you get is a "bit" of these other technologies but not enough of any of them to really make a difference. I recentl;y talked to a large government installation who had told me they were going to buy one of two hardware solutions as these did other things as well as IDS and guess what? Yup, they did not stack up! (pardon the pun). Personally I believe the firewall as we knew it is dead! They were getting far to complex and unweildy and most organisations use 20% of their firewalls capabilities and a "simple Port and address blocking firewall" with a good IPS, Filtering etc. is a better solution and easier to manage. I have clients who have deployed Guard at the entry point and have not even bothered buying a firewall!
