Robbie Gemmell commented on AMQ-7442:
-------------------------------------
I think the original mailing list discussion I recall from last year and a
later followup months later, was for 5.16.x to proceed while building on 8 and
only running on JDK11, with 5.17.x then building on 11. I've probably missed
followup discussions but at that point I think the 'when to drop JDK8' decision
was largely punted as folks commenting felt it was early and/or a separate
matter than whether it builds on 11.
That may or may not still be true, though I guess it also largely depends on
the expected target date for doing such releases. I think its over 6 months
since 5.16.x was first ready to be released 'next week' and yet still it
continues with new major changes being considered at this stage. I think it
should just be released since its been baking so long already. Other version
numbers are available, so 5.17.0 and later can happen just as soon as
appropriate changes are subsequently ready.

> 5.16.0 has been updated to be runtime compatible with Java 8+ including Java
> 11 and this is the Jira to allow build compatibility with JDK 11 as well.
> I'm targeting 5.17.0 for this as it will make it easier if we remove Scala
> and LevelDB support.
