I just set CXXFLAGS from the command line in the terminal. It can also be
set as argument to the configure script, but if you're using build.sh, then the
command line is better.
$ export CXXFLAGS="-std=c++17"
or, in case gdb is needed later
$export CXXFLAGS="-std=c++17 -g"
