In certain cases it's perfectly fine to modify a class in order to test it
effectively. For example, converting a `private` method to `protected` and
creating an "accessor" in the test module in the same package is acceptable.
That's been done in a number of places (e.g.
8a9f326b25e5feaedcb1393f8d2a07a9d9432c48).
