@rmetzger Thanks for sharing your thoughts and concerns. I understand your concerns about merging new features after feature freeze. And I am fine with leaving this patch out of 1.12. In case it might relieve your concern a little bit, the reason this patch did not compile was due to a race condition with another PR.
