nit: could be one line and not introduce a variable
At the moment it reads a boolean - if it is true then we return null, if
false we deserialize.
But the code above when we outputView.clear(); sets this to false, implying
there is nothing to serialise.
I think renaming the readBoolean to something more meaningful would really
help here
