Gomathivinayagam Muthuvinayagam commented on HBASE-11699:
---------------------------------------------------------
Thanks for quick response,
Few questions
1) Can I disable the balancer while I shutdown region server, suppose if a
region server that is added to exclusion list which is running currently? Is it
recommended? or adding few additional parameters to the configuration which
informs the administrators that balancer may be disabled while a region server
is shutdown by the new code?
2) Currently, graceful shutdown uses a ruby script to unload regions from a
region server before shutting down that region server. I am just planning to
convert that code to java equivalent code. What is your comment on this one?
3) Can I add api in the HBaseAdmin to add/remove region servers to exclusion
list?

> Currently HBase does not support adding set of region servers to be in the
> exclusion list. So that administrators can prevent accidental startups of
> some region servers to join the cluster. There was initially some work done,
> and it is available in https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HBASE-3833. It
> was not done after that.
> I am planning to contribute it as a patch, and I would like to do some
> improvements as well. Instead of storing the exclusion entries on a file, I
> am planning to store it on zookeeper. Can anyone suggest thoughts on this?
