Yes, but see also the row around Jackson on HBASE-13149 -- our transitive 
dependencies are effectively our API according to the semver compat matrix. 
Having the tools to detect these changes earlier will make all of our lives 
easier.

bq. The JavaACC tool under the covers can be made to check compat between any 
two versions of any set of jars, but you'll have to do it by hand.

Yes, this is exactly what I'm hoping we can exploit.
