Some context: we have a few cases in elasticsearch where we can speed up
queries with sorts precisely opposite to the index sort by injecting a
competitive iterator that skips towards the end of a segment. This works
because we can use metadata sitting outside Lucene to identify the cases where
it applies, but it's not really general enough to sit in Lucene itself. This
change allows us to plug in our own competitive iterator implementation in
those situations.
