Some context: we have a few cases in elasticsearch where we can speed up queries with sorts precisely opposite to the index sort by injecting a competitive iterator that skips towards the end of a segment. This works because we can use metadata sitting outside Lucene to identify the cases where it applies, but it's not really general enough to sit in Lucene itself.
