Thank you for your prompt response. Here is what happened when I
followed your advice.

First of all, there is no openoffice directory in the /opt folder. I did
find the folder /usr/lib/ooo-3.0, which I deleted after using Software
Installer to remove the openoffice.org program. Then, I reinstalled
openoffice.org from the Mandriva repositories. This did not produce any
directories in the /opt folder, did reinstall the /usr/lib/000-3.0
folder, and gives the same problem I had before - - none of the
openoffice programs will open, the same error message appearing, to the
effect that the user language interface cannot be determined. I have
looked through /usr, /etc, /opt, /var, /root, /boot, and even /bin and
/sbin directories, but cannot find any other directories installed by
openoffice.

I did check out the 3.4 builds for which you gave me a link. I don't
know which one to use, since there are no instructions on the web page.

Please advise.
