The two unused backgrouns were inserted using: Format > Slide design... > Load with the 4.0.1 or 4.1.0 versions. I have been able to delete the two unused templates using Regina's first way: View > Master > Slide Master. with the 4.1.0 beta version. By the way, depending on the language used in the user interface the templates that can be loaded doing Format > Slide design... > Load are not the same. That is because the templates used with each UI are in different carpets/directories.
