I'd like to mention that not long ago I made bdb an optional dependency, and anyone using maildir format like me doesn't need it. So distributions could just drop support for it, and optionally provide the mdconvert utility (which will need bdb) for anyone using the format requiring bdb. I am not sure if there is any value except backward compatibility to the code using bdb? Because if not, any development effort for supporting something else would be a complete waste of time.
