Or use a technique like pdftk (<http://www.accesspdf.com/pdftk/>) to compile the Java to native code with gcj.

        But there still advantages to native C++...


With the exception of startup times, java and C# apps are fast enough to not be
noticed by end users.

Depends on what you are doing - esp. in terms of memory usage and garbage collection coming into play.
