If the image data is based on a 4 component colorspace (CMYK), HOW COULD YOU "fall back" to a 3 component colorspace (RGB)? You can't just throw one of the components out - and if you did, you'd get a VERY WEIRD colored image.
As to your problem, we'd need to see the PDF and/or the PNG in question...
