Note that this behavior didn't show at the time the book was written.
Maybe it's a new feature introduced in Adobe Reader X.
For instance: I see that the PDF has artefacts that disappear when you 
save it with Reader.
The metadata generated by OOo is stored in Unicode; that is also changed 
after saving the document with Reader.

My guess is that OOo adds something to the PDF that Reader doesn't like 
since version X.
