If you're a customer of iText Software, they might take a look at what 
is causing the problem, but in general iText 2.1.7 is no longer 
supported. It dates from July 2009.
Note that Java 1.4 has been declared dead since December 2006. It was 
officially End Of Life in October 2008:

As you can see, even Java 5 has been dead for a couple of years, and 
Java 6 will be EOL in November this year. So whoever is responsible for 
your production server is working with obsolete software. If I were the 
CEO, I'd decide to upgrade. (The reason why iText sticks with Java 5 is 
because many people are still demanding a Java 5 version.)
