I would also like to keep the list running, but I understand all the frustrations. But these types of questions will not go away entirely. Stackoverflow has a way of dealing with them, but I have always found the list useful as I am more likely to read a post form the list and if it is answered with something I think I'll use grabbing it and keeping the answer.
If you wanted, I'd be willing to volunteer to help out sort through all those messages. And as for the question of what to say for those who post a question and it goes unanswered how about something like: "Tell us what you have done and tell us where you have researched to find the answer already."
