Surely William it also depends how 'you' define open-source.
There is clearly a wide spectrum of what that might mean

And in this case I take it to be:
Actively developed closed and open versions of the same software by a core
team who are open to exploration, improvement and bug fixing from any who
use the software and are keen enough to contribute rather than just being
leeches, BUT not the kind of free-for-all, no one's in charge, which
requires GIT to stop people then complaining that 'this project is all over
the place'

Works for most of us....
As someone who has three little things added but is happy to wait for
official releases...

The latter seems to be a common need for open source software projects in
general.  With closed source software, well, there's nothing to patch ;).
It's hard to see why you wouldn't want to enable a builtin SF feature [1].
