Could you remind me which of the contributions in the above discussion 
explains why iText generates [1 /FitH 10000] when it doesn't seem to 
work with all viewers, while [1 /FitH -32768] does?

Paulo Soares had claimed authorship of the original source code, noting 
that the value 10000 was "arbitrary". He also added: "Why -32768 would 
work better is a mystery to me."

All I'm trying to do is get my code working with as many viewers as 
possible, including especially the Adobe one - for obvious reasons.

If there is no a priori reason why the value shouldn't be -32768, could 
the authors/maintainers of iText offer to incorporate it in future 
versions - after due testing in which I would be happy to be a guinea pig.
