I did not wish to blame anyone, or to hold iText, its authors and maintainers, nor anyone else for that matter, responsible. To me, responsibility for this odd phenomenon is immaterial. As I said, all I'm trying to do is be Joe Programmer, getting his little bit of code to work. And as far as I can judge, given my limited knowledge of all of this specialist area, is that the constant -32768 seems to work better than 10000.
