Formed through the recognition of the demand for a central source of consolidated information covering IT Service Management, the IT Service Management Forum (itSMF) and the Help Desk Institute (HDI) have formed a joint collaboration to create the Service Futures Group.
This group of key specialists from the Service Management Industry will produce quarterly reports on essential issues for Directors and Senior Managers responsible for delivering IT service management in their businesses.
Barclay Rae, Head of Consulting at HDI and editor of the Service Futures Group said, Its really difficult for busy directors and managers to keep abreast of all the many developments in service management, but there are strong regulatory and commercial pressures on them to do so. By providing independent and critical review of information coming from analysts, standards bodies and suppliers and presenting this in clear, concise and accessible format we are ensuring that they can keep up to speed. This is good for the businesses and good for their customers as well as it will ensure the rapid propagation of industry best practise.
The reports will be generated from existing topical research and information, additional specially commissioned work and the industry specific skills and knowledge brought to the group by its members. They will review the critical topic areas of Strategy, People, Processes, Standards, Tools and Management and will provide vital information, presented in a concise format, to businesses in the process of implementing a Service Management strategy, or who have one in place and are looking at methods for benchmarking and continuous improvement of their activities.
In an industry where there is a wide range of research information, but little detailed analysis of that information, the Services Futures Group intends to provide clear points of reference for standard industry questions. For example what are the staffing levels needed in 1st, 2nd and 3rd line support; what is the return on investment (ROI) for using ITIL or implementing ISO/IEC 20000; and how to format a standard Service Catalogue? And equally important what is the future direction for ITSM?
The Service Futures Group will also commission specialist research from time to time to fill gaps in available information, or to address specific issues highlighted through the specialist knowledge of the members of the group.
Access to the reports is through a simple annual subscription, which ensures that Directors and Senior Managers are kept abreast of the developments, trends and key information about the industry through the delivery of focussed, peer-reviewed, reports. With an ever more complex regulatory environment and industry specific strictures like Sarbanes-Oxley putting pressure on businesses to deliver properly accountable services, the Service Futures Group reports are set to be essential reading for the IT Service Management community.
Subscribers to the Service Futures Group will also be able to attend meetings where each report will be presented and there will be an opportunity to discuss the findings.
Roger Grimshaw, Business Development Manager at itSMF said, This new service contributes to one of the key objectives for Business Development at itSMF and, since many of our members are also members of HDI, it made sense to pool our resources in this exciting joint initiative. We are really looking forward to conducting the Best Practice research for the second quarters report.
Barclay Rae continued, By creating a subscriber community and involving them in discussion of the findings we ensure that the information provided continues to be relevant to the industry. We are not going to be sitting in an ivory tower insulated from reality; our reports will be firmly grounded in the reality of carrying out service management in a business.
To subscribe to this service and attend the launch event on Friday 24th March in London please visit www.service-futures.org For a personal discussion at the Helpdesk and IT Support Show (HITSs) please visit the itSMF stand (number 360) or HDI stand (number 200) from 25th to 27th April 2006 at Olympia in London.
