No, it doesn't work after a power cycle, but the dmesg does change from:
tveeprom 1-0050: Huh, no eeprom present (err=-121)?
tveeprom 1-0050: Encountered bad packet header [00]. Corrupt or not a 
Hauppauge eeprom.
to:
tveeprom 1-0050: Ran out of data!

I don't completely understand the i2c bus thing, but I'm sure we're on to
