I believe that's a good bingo.  When I loaded alsamixer, I got no
sound from anything.  I turn on (and up) the PCM setting and sound
appeared, as if by magic.  I have since captured video AND sound from
both cards.

The problem now is... it does not appear to be capturing sound on the
second card to capture.  i.e. I do something like:
  cat /dev/video0 > tuner1.mpg
  cat /dev/video1 > tuner2.mpg
There will only be sound in tuner1.mpg.  Likewise, if I reverse the
order (after a reboot, for example), then only tuner2.mpg would hace
sound.  Old files that were captured and had sound work fine.  I
wonder if perhaps this shouldn't be a new topic...
