Hi all,
sorry for bothering the mailing list, but I tried to fix the problem now for almost a week. I am using a gentoo-kernel (2.6.10 r6) and have a PVR350. The ivtv driver (I tried almost anything from 0.2 to 0.3 whatever, including some gentoo ebuilds) compiles without problems and gets loaded correctly. (see a sample dmesg below). I also tried various firmware versions.
First I tried to use the radio application, since I expected to get at least some radio signal without antenna, but I only got (silent) noise. I quickly patched radio.c to print the signal strength for each frequency (not only for freqs with a signal strength > 16384), but whatever radio.c scans, it reports the same signal strength (8192) for each frequency ?!? Then I tried the same thing with an antenna, which makes no difference. The value seems to differ for different ivtv versions, but remains always constant for all frequencies. Tuning the radio to a well known radio station results in silent noise.
Of course I also tried to use the TV tuner and the encoder. cat /dev/video > a.mpg produces a valid mpeg stream, so I guess the encoder is working. I can use the ivtvctl tool to query and adjust the settings, but I am not able to tune to a channel. I only get an mpeg with white noise and sometimes almost a picture (I have cable so the signal quality should be ok). I tried to use the composite and svideo input, but it's quite the same. I do not get a black screen, but also no picture. Sometimes, if I switch inputs (-p x), I seem to get a single correct frame.
I talked with a collegue, who has a PVR350 working in his Linux box and I use the same commands and setup (load ivtv, switch to pal, set resolution , cat /dev/video > a.mpg). It works for him, but not for me :-(
I personaly think I am just missing some important piece of configuration. Some (probably trivial) setting I have to do to have ivtv working. However, I now tried for almost a week, and there is no progress at all. The most annoying thing is that everything seems to work fine. No errors, nothing.
Some more concrete questions:
- May the the card be too new ? I just bought it, so perhaps it is not supported ? However, the dmesg looks ok (for me)
- do I have to pick any special version for i2c ? I'm just using the one coming with the 2.6.10 kernel.
- the ivtvfwextract script does not work for my CD ! The file the tools wants to extract from the exe/zip archive is on the CD as a separate file and not included in the zip file ! Is this a known problem ? I adjusted the script and got correct firmware images (md5 is ok). I also tried varios fw version from the ivtv webside. No difference !
Sorry for the long mail and the questions, but since I do not get any error messages and played around quite a while, I am slowly running out of ideas. All the HowTos present a rather straight installation procedure without major problems. I followed several of them and ended up with the same problems all the time.
any idea or help would be welcome ... kind regards ...
