OK - so at least I'm not the only one!

Here's what is output from mythfrontend when it happens:

prebuffering pause
prebuffering pause
prebuffering pause
prebuffering pause
timed out waiting for free video buffers
prebuffering pause
prebuffering pause
.
.
.

/var/tmp/mythbackend.log shows nothing related.


Anyone got a clue whats happening? Is it fixable?
