Thanks for the pointer - it turns out I had the kernel versions of some of the drivers under /lib/modules/2.6.11-gentoo-r9/extra, which makes me think the code to detect duplicate versions isn't working any longer. I remember seeing mention of changes to it before, but I never bothered to check to see if it was still working, and when I rebuilt my kernel a month or so ago it put the 'extra' versions in there.
